The Laguiole Rossignol Champagne Sabre is a showpiece unto itself. The act of "Sabrage" (opening a bottle with a sabre) creates the ultimate entertaining indulgence by actually slicing off the top of the bottle (and not just removing the cork).

Originating from the conquests of the Napoleonic Era, legend claims that instead of removing the wire around the cork, Napoleon and his officers would "behead" their celebratory champagne bottles with a graceful slice of the sword. Today the sabre is still used, creating a smooth break in the neck of a champagne bottle for a dramatic way to celebrate.

Beautifully hand crafted in France featuring brass bolster, signature Laguiole "Bee" and riveted wood handle, the high carbon stainless steel blade is 13" long with an overall length of 19". Complete with a wood stand for display, Broadway Panhandler offers the Laguiole Rossignol Champagne Sabre so you can sabrer la bouteill, or "saber" the bottle, with style.

We have found that sabrage works only on French made champagne bottles as they have a seam at the neck of the bottle. Here are the essential steps for a successful opening: Make sure the bottle is properly chilled, then submerge the entire bottle in ice water for 20 minutes; Make sure the foreseen trajectory of the cork is clear of all vulnerable objects; Locate the vertical seam running along the length of the bottle; Undress the bottle by peeling away any paper or foil along the seam and removing the wire cage; Secure your grip on the wet bottle with a towel or non-slip material; Hold the bottle tilted slightly upward with the cork facing away from you; Using the top edge of the blade (with the graphics on the blade facing up if you are right handed) and following the contour of the bottle, sweep the sword briskly and firmly along the seam of the bottle to the cork neck in a swift motion with follow-through. The top of the bottle below the cork should break cleanly. A small amount of champagne will gush out. Inspect for any stray glass chards then pour and enjoy.

As practice makes perfect, the more bottles you serve using this technique the sooner it will become second nature. Please use caution during Sabrage. The sabre is not intended to be used as a weapon or cutting tool.
